Cave Geckos

A relative of the ever-popular leopard gecko, cave geckos (Goniurosaurus spp.) may be less common, however they make interesting vivarium subjects. Native to China, Vietnam, and Japan, this genus requires cooler temperatures and higher temperatures than leopard and African fat-tailed geckos. They can be kept in plastic bins similar to many terrestrial geckos, however they seem more at home in naturalistic setups. The small and medium sized species are especially suited to bioactive keeping as they are less likely to uproot plants. These geckos will make full use of a taller enclosure if given cork bark and branches for climbing. Over the years I have kept and bred a number of Goniurosaurus species. It has been somewhat difficult to obtain enough animals to establish breeding groups and this has become more difficult since their CITES designation a several years ago. I currently keep and breed G. araneus, G. hainanensis and G. bawangliensis. I hope to work with G. luii again in future.
